Activity 9: The Machine is Changing Us
How is the video relevant to Social Studies and English education?
This is a difficult question to answer in full. However, I would say that the video demonstrates rather well how the subject matter can be relevant to Social Studies education, especially the Youtube bit; history is now constantly being filmed, and Youtube has become the single largest archive of historical footage. As for, English, I think the video shows how the English language is being destroyed the internet, where incomplete, grammatically incorrect and incorrectly spelled sentences are increasingly commonplace. Don't even get me started on Youtube comments.
What does the term 'recognition' refer to in the video and how could this concept be useful for teaching and learning?
This is the hard question. I never really "got" what he meant by recognition, and I don't remember hearing it while watching the video, so I can't really comment on it. I'll guess that recognition refers to fame on the internet, but I don't see its relevance to teaching and learning.
